A bit of wishful thinking on the part of Paramahansa Yogananda.
Of course, that doesn't mean that unselfishness is bad, it just means that when being unselfish, don't expect others to always act in kind.
Mrs. S, I think if one is truly unselfish, they are not looking for anything in return. The gift of friendship is it's own reward.
